It is with much love, honor and respect that we announce the passing of Dorothy Laverne Thomas McCoy, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, with family by her side, Dorothy entered heavenly rest in the arms of her Lord and personal savior Jesus Christ, in Lancaster, California, at the age of eighty-two.
She will be remembered for her love of Jesus Christ, her husband, family and friends. She also enjoyed going to church, praying, cooking homemade meals and desserts, eating, cleaning, quilting, crafting, financial acumen, being the loudest cheerleader at her children and grandchildren’s sporting events, teaching, laughing, thrifting, spending time with her family, serenading her family on their birthdays and her sacrificial giving.
Dorothy was born the second oldest child of five children, in Blytheville, Arkansas on August 2, 1942. Due to Dorothy’s unfortunate upbringing, she could not go to school unless it was a rainy day, which she prayed for a rainy day so that she could get an education. Instead, she worked in a cotton field until early adulthood, attempting to provide for her family. Dorothy had a God given talent to style hair, and volunteered in her school cafeteria to take care of her mother, four siblings, and niece, Barbara Ann.
Dorothy met and married the man of her dreams, Horace Lee McCoy, Sr. and had four sons (Horace, Larry, Michael and David) and a daughter (Sandra). They also had the opportunity to raise their Goddaughter, Cheryl Mungin-Lovette. They traveled the world as a military family. With only a high school education, Dorothy worked as a cashier at Edwards AFB for many years, was a supervisor at Gottschalks for about ten years and volunteered at her children’s schools for countless years. Dorothy and Horace Sr. lived a happy life for 62 years, until she passed of cancer in 2024.
Dorothy loved God with all of her heart. She attended Grace Chapel and enjoyed listening to and sharing the messages from Pastor Chris, participating in Women of the Word and her small group. Throughout her career at Gottschalks, Dorothy won many awards, gifts and trips as she was known for exceeding sales goals and for her excellent customer service.
Dorothy is survived in death by her husband, Horace Lee McCoy, Sr., children, Horace Jr., Sandra, Larry (Laurene), Michael (Marcella), David (Andrea) and daughter Cheryl Mungin-Lovette, oldest sister, Mazella Thomas, grandchildren, Nate, Isaiah, LeAnne (Eduardo, Ava, Aaron), Amanda (Jordon, Parker, Dennis, Alana), Verdel (Verdel Jr.), Lauren (Brandon), Justin, Elijah (Victory, Clarity), Alia, Christian, Maykayla, Julian (Jayden, Bobby, Ever), Perris (Anthony, Amara, Alivia), Justin (Justin Jr.), Tre, Alyssa, LaiLani, Ariah, Laingston, and Daniel and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, brother and sisters in love and friends.
