Edwin Lazaro Corpuz, M.D., 1962-2017. Loving son, brother, uncle, friend. He passed away on Jan 13, 2017 at the Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, California.
Edwin joins his father Gil G. Corpuz and is survived by his mother, Esperanza, older brother Gil Jr and wife Thelma Manguerra, younger sister, Hope and husband Dane Lariosa, and his nephews, nieces, classmates, and friends.
Edwin was born on June 30, 1962 in the city of Agana, Guam. He moved with the family wherever his dad was assigned being a career U.S. Navy man. Edwin finished high school at St. Jude Academy in the Philippines, batch 1978 then graduated in 1986 from the University of Santo Tomas with a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery degree. He started his residency at Mary Chiles Hospital in the Philippines until he moved back to the United States. He did a transitional residency at the West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park, Illinois, moved to Phoenix, Arizona and completed his residency training at Maricopa Medical Center, Psychiatric Annex. Edwin started worked as a staff psychiatrist with Value Options, Maricopa County. He then moved back to Lancaster, California and worked with the Beck Psychiatric Medical Group and the Southern California Kaiser-Permanente Medical Group. He was a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the Southern California Psychiatric Society and the University of Santo Tomas Alumni Medical Association.
Edwin loved life and it showed in his outgoing personality and his desire to explore every nook and cranny of places he visited. He enjoyed visits to the zoos, parks, museums, airshows, and amusement centers at Lancaster and Los Angeles while accompanied by family, friends, and caregivers. His motorized wheelchair would always be leading the pack and more than often he would stay until closing time. Edwin was also an avid movie goer and a collector of comics and coins. He cheered for the Arizona Diamondbacks and LA Dodgers and relished watching games at Dodger stadium while eating Dodger dogs. He kept in touch with high school and college classmates, attended and looked forward to their visits and mini-reunions. Edwin will always be remembered for his infectious smile, his generosity, and fighting spirit that no doubt inspired those around him.
Viewing is on Jan 26, Thur and Jan 27, Friday, 4 pm - 8 pm each day at the Halley-Murphy-Olson Mortuary in Lancaster, California. A Mass of the Resurrection for Edwin follows on Jan 28, Sat, 10 am at Saint Serra Church in Quartz Hill, California. Edwin will be cremated and his remains inurned in a ceremony at the Good Shepard Cemetery at Quartz Hill, California date and time pending.
