Marina Villanueva Reyes 1924-2018
Marina Villanueva Reyes passed from this life on Sunday, July 22, in Lancaster, CA, four days after her 94th birthday.
She was born on July 18, 1924 in Hacienda Villachuato, Michoacan, Mexico to parents Eutimio Espinosa Villanueva and Maria Anastasia Frausto Villanueva. By the time she was 3 years old, her family had moved to Glendora, CA where she and her younger siblings were raised. Marina and her family worked as seasonal farm workers in Central California and in citrus packing houses in Glendora.
In May of 1953 Marina married Cipriano (Tano) Reyes. They lived for many years in Pacoima, CA where they raised four children. Marina worked in manufacturing and later became a teacher’s aide for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
In retirement years, Marina and Tano lived in Pacoima and in Meridian, ID before settling in Lancaster. Marina enjoyed crafting, quilting, cooking, reading, taking photographs, and watching classic movies as well as Dodger and Angel baseball. Most of all, she enjoyed visiting and staying in touch with friends and her large extended family. She actively supported her grandchildren’s many activities. Her cheerful nature and caring concern for others are the legacy she leaves for those who loved her.
Marina is survived by her children George (Susan) Reyes, Edward (Janet) Reyes, Nadine (Henry) Cardenas and Sophia Reyes; her grandchildren Anthony (Melissa) Briones, David Briones, Anjelica Cardenas, Felisa Cardenas, Enrique Cardenas, Matthew Reyes, Stephen Reyes, Gabriella Reyes and Georgianna Reyes; her great-grandchildren Andoni, Teagan, and Nora Briones; and brothers Charles (Sue) Villanueva, Tito (Judy) Villanueva, Alfredo (Clara) Villanueva and, Miguel (Zoe) Villanueva.
She was preceded in death by Tano, her husband of 43 years; her brother Ynez Villanueva; and her sisters Asuncion (Chona) Damian Heinzen, Bernarda Villanueva and Isabel (Chavela) Siders.
Vigil services will be held on Thursday evening, July 26 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Halley Olsen Murphy Mortuary in Lancaster. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church; burial will follow at 1:00pm at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in San Fernando.
In lieu of flowers, Marina requested donations to a Children’s Hospital or St. Jude Research Hospitals.
