May Ju Tong, 89, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday morning, June 1, 2024 at her home in
Lancaster, CA . Her daughter, Max, and husband, James, were at her bedside at the time.
May was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in May, 1935. She moved with her family to Buena Park,
California in 1943 and has lived in CA since then. She attended Belmont High School and got
her Associates degree from LA City College. In 1959 she married James Tong and spent the next
phase of her life raising her six children and helped her husband run a small grocery store in
Culver City, CA. May and James moved their family to their dream home in Lancaster, CA in
1978. This is where she immersed herself in raising chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits and
even a steer. She signed her kids up for every 4-H project available and became the project
leader for Arts and Crafts, Food Preservation and many others. Eventually she became the 4-H
Community leader for the Neenach club and volunteered in that position for over 30 years.
Throughout their marriage she also helped her husband James manage their real estate
holdings.
May was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and accepted
many volunteer assignments over the years including 20 years as the Ward Librarian.
She loved spending time with her family. This included family reunions with her children and
grandchildren, or holiday gatherings and parties with her siblings and their extended families.
She always lived within two hours of parents and/or siblings so she could attend all the
extended family events. One passion she shared with her sister Margie was making quilts.
They would often get together for several days at a time and have a little quilt-making retreats.
May loved giving away the finished quilts as much as she loved making them. Playing cards was
another activity that May shared with her family. She taught all of her kids and grandchildren
how to play Nertz and Shanghai Rummy. After many family dinners, she would always look
forward to a game or two of Shanghai Rummy.
May is survived by her husband, James, son Randy (Eleanor), daughter Sandy Baker (Derek), son
Glenn (Liz), daughter Max Wright (Herk), son Alex (Julie), daughter Carolyn Fawcett (Mike), 16
grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Fred Ju, Lin Ju
and James Ju and her sisters Margie Lew, and Amy Wong.
