Sheila Joy Green, a radiant beacon of resilience and warmth, passed away peacefully at her home in Lancaster, California, on her 85th birthday, July 11, 2024. Born on July 11, 1939, in Glendale, California, Sheila was the cherished daughter of Forest Owen Petty and Thelma Petty. She enriched the lives of many, shaping her legacy through a vibrant life filled with adventure, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
A proud graduate of George Washington High School in Los Angeles, where she served as Class President of her 1957 graduating class. A testament to her leadership skills that would shine throughout her life. She married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Brooks. They had 2 children, Janelle & Steven. Her ambitious spirit carried her through various careers, with her first role at Oroweat Baking Company, where her tenacity and dedication laid the foundation for her professional life. After a fruitful decade there she met and married second husband Duncan Cormack and they had 2 children, Robert & Lynnai. Her vibrant personality served her career in food service well. In 1981 she embarked on a new chapter in Santa Rosa, California, where she met Danny Green. They married and ultimately established their home in Lancaster, California in 1989.
Among her many passions, summers at Lake Havasu, Arizona, brought her boundless joy as she reveled in boating, waverunner rides, and sunsets shared with family and friends—the "River family"—she cherished dearly. Sheila’s spirit was inexhaustible; she was a go-getter with an infectious zeal for life. Known for her sociable personality, she maintained a busy social calendar filled with laughter, good times, and cherished moments with friends old and new.
Home was where Sheila found solace and happiness, tending to her garden filled with life and color, soaking up the morning sun, and enjoying peaceful evenings surrounded by nature. Her love for her two dogs, who would curl up beside her during sweet afternoon naps, illustrated the nurturing heart that she possessed. Sheila was also a night owl, often lost in the digital world from the comfort of her home.
Perhaps her proudest accomplishments were rooted in her profound dedication to the community. With over 30 years of unwavering commitment to the Alcoholic's Anonymous program, Sheila left an indelible mark on countless lives. She became a mother figure to many within the program, guiding individuals towards recovery and imparting wisdom shaped by her own experiences. Her tireless efforts led to the successful development of a program designed to assist inmates with their recovery, fostering hope where it was most needed.
Sheila is survived by her beloved sister, Judy Hillman and her children: Janelle Hartt, Robert Cormack, and Lynnai Zavala. Her legacy continues through her ten grandchildren—Jimmy, Jason, Janai Hartt, Ian, Erick, Zach, and Chandlar Zavala, and Blaze, India, and Suede Brooks—and five great-grandchildren—Jaxon, Joey, and Charli Hartt, and Jaidyn and Jordyn Reid. Each of these lives reflects a fragment of her spirited essence, ensuring that her love and kindness will transcend generations.
