Walter Paul Schmitt, 89, passed away on December 30, 2020, in Lancaster, California.
Walter was born on June 22, 1931, in Palm Bay, Florida, to his parents Louis and Barbara Schmitt. He
grew up in a large family that included fourteen children, which often led to many of the funny stories
that Walter was so fond of telling.
After high school, Walter served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. These skills then
carried on throughout his civilian career as he participated in various projects, such as several of the
early space programs at Cape Canaveral, Florida and the B-2 bomber program at Edwards Air Force
Base.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Roberta, with whom he had the enormous joy of sharing a blended
family that included their nine children, twenty-four grandchildren, and twenty-one great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Anita Molino and his granddaughter Katherine Haskins.
Spending time with family and watching baseball were two of Walter’s favorite things to do. In addition,
he was renowned for his woodworking skills. Walter patiently crafted thousands of beautiful pieces
over the years, which have become cherished keepsakes to anyone that was lucky enough to receive
them.
Throughout his years, Walter was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and he volunteered for many
charitable organizations, such as St. Vincent De Paul and his local church.
Funeral arrangements have been made through Halley-Olsen Mortuary for a funeral mass at 12 noon on
Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Sacred Heart Church, This will be followed by a graveside service at
approximately 1:30pm at Good Shepherd Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that a
donation be made in Walter’s name to a charity of choice.
